Melissa Colbern M.D

Executive And Medical Director

Dr. Colbern established Mary’s Choices through the help of the Catholic parishes, parishioners and priests in Topeka in the year 2012.

Dr. Colbern received a B.S. in Biology at Kansas State University and her medical degree from the University of Kansas. She completed her family medicine training in Wichita, KS at Via Christi, focusing her education on obstetrics and pediatrics. While in Wichita, Dr. Colbern volunteered at a pregnancy help center, assisting pregnant women in crisis.

Dr. Colbern came back to her home town, Topeka, KS in 2000, and established a Family Medicine practice and enjoyed a wide scope of family care, including obstetrics for 13 years. During this time, Dr. Colbern won the Best of Topeka award for Top Doctors in Topeka four times.

Dr. Colbern moved from private practice to a telemedicine practice in 2014 so she could have more time to devote to Mary’s Choices. She joined a telemedicine company in 2014 and was one of their first doctors in this ground-breaking company. This telemedicine company has provided a flexible schedule for Dr. Colbern, allowing her to work full-time as a family physician overnights seeing patients virtuallly, while accommodating her daytime schedule at Mary’s Choices so she can continue to serve women there.

In 2020, when the COVID pandemic occurred, Dr. Colbern was able to transition Mary’s Choices to become a virtual pregnancy help clinic. She is excited to offer online visits to her Mary’s Choices patients, a skill she has used for many years in her job at her telemedicine employer. Dr. Colbern believes that Mary’s Choices can reach many more abortion-minded women by becoming a virtual clinic.

Mary’s Choices does NOT provide abortion services in the clinic.
